Welcome to my 25th year at Cerro Gordo!

My email is vgilpin@cgbroncos.org

Currently, I teach Composition/Literature 1, Composition/Literature 2, dual-credit English 101, dual-credit English 102, dual-credit Educational Foundations, and dual-credit Intro to Theatre at Cerro Gordo High School; I've also taught Speech, Drama, Composition/Literature 3, Composition/Literature 4, and a modern literature course (Lit Survey) here in previous years.

I've often said, particularly to my university students, that while my career is teaching, my hobby is also teaching. While teaching full-time at Cerro Gordo High School, I have continued to take professional courses as well as working with three other campuses: as a Teaching Assistant through Harvard University Extension School and an adjunct instructor at Richland Community College and Millikin University. This has allowed me to continue to build skills in working with a variety of learning styles, something used daily at CG!

I have a Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama with 6-12 teacher certification in both as well as gifted and dual-credit certifications, a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction, and a doctorate in Education and Leadership. In 2014, I earned a Master’s of Extension Studies in Liberal Arts in the area of Humanities with a concentration in English through Harvard University Extension School, where I was honored to receive the Thomas Small Prize. In addition, I recently earned the Certificate in Media and Technology for Education and the Instructional Leadership Certificate, both through Harvard Graduate School of Education.

After not attending a professional conference for 4 years due to illness, I was excited to present at the Illinois Association of Teachers of English conference Fall 2023. In addition, last year, while demonstrating how to do research for my seniors' research papers, I accidentally wrote a book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0D4Q5LV9C/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?ie=UTF8&dib_tag=se&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.cVauotRj6Hij6yPIqimKGO9axVhrLJ33F2wjEhdPEiAXJXOJp17IHEgaxCggne3OkzVuCudCsJRHx0x36khM4856oXNi6J2FDDpUqgGwHfA.Q5WwNL5g1aLtcDr7L33MJbp0rIUKrY2K2kRdF5190CU&qid=1721392823&sr=8-1

When I'm not reading or doing something academic, I can be found analyzing movies, talking about vampires in literature and film, eating Indian food with my husband, and covered with as many cats and dogs as I can hold. The students are well aware that if they get a new animal, I want to meet it or at least see a copious amount of pictures!

I love my students and love teaching. The best strategy for success is communication, so please feel free to contact me or encourage my students to do so.
